What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a condition of the eye that damages the optic nerve, which is the connection between your eye and your brain and is responsible for good vision. This damage is often caused by high eye pressure, but not always. Glaucoma tends to be inherited. Glaucoma often has no symptoms, and vision loss is slow, but Dr. Nguyen & Dr. Kawa can detect optic nerve damage with regular annual eye exams and monitor glaucoma suspicion with regular diagnostic testing, including scans of the optic nerve and full visual field testing. Treatment includes eye drops, lasers, and surgery. There is no cure for glaucoma. Management is to slow the progression of the disease.
